The Healdsburg Patch reported today that on a homeless man was arrested for suspicion of carjacking, evading police, and assault with a deadly weapon. The homeless man is suspected of stealing a Volvo station wagon from an 85 year old man who was loading groceries into the vehicle with his wife at Lucky’s Supermarket.

Prior to the arrest, the stolen vehicle was involved in a police pursuit reaching speeds in excess of 100MPH throughout Sonoma County. Thankfully, the fleeing vehicle was not involved in an accident. When a vehicle is involved in a car chase, the drivers often run red lights, make unsafe lane changes, and disregard several rules of the road. Accidents at high speeds often involve serious injuries such as spinal cord injuries.

In some cases, the stolen car owner’s insurance may not be liable for damages caused by the thief of the stolen vehicle. There are special circumstances, however, such as an owner carelessly leaving their keys in a vehicle that will allow the insurance company to be held liable. Sometimes drivers have uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage which comes in to play. Every case is very different and should be carefully examined by an experienced car accident attorney who will work to get you maximum compensation for your injuries.
