On the evening of October 23, 2019, the Kincade Fire started burning northeast of Geyserville, CA. A large portion of Sonoma County has been evacuated and 374 structures have been lost so far.
What Caused the Kincade Fire?
Official media outlets cite the Kincade blaze as “under investigation.” Still, Pacific Gas and Electric Co. (PG&E) has acknowledged a failure of their transmission line near the Kincade Fire’s origin point. The high-voltage device failed moments before the fire began. Additionally, PG&E has already been linked to the 2018 Camp Fire, and the company filed bankruptcy while compensating several wildfire victims.
Prioritizing Kincade Fire Claims
Although PG&E is currently filing for bankruptcy, their case will not interfere with PG&E fire claims filed by victims of the Kincade Fire. These new claims will take priority over those filed in 2018 in conjunction with the Camp Fire and those linked to 2017’s North Bay Fires, all of which are included in PG&E’s bankruptcy proceedings.
The Human Cost
Approximately 180,000 people are under evacuation orders. Two firefighters have reported injuries and more than 2,000 firefighters are actively battling the blaze. About 374 structures have been destroyed, including residential and commercial properties. Evacuees and their pets are gathered at evacuation centers in the following locations:

- Santa Rosa Fairgrounds
- St. Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco
According to the Sonoma County Sheriff, the Kincade Fire marks “the largest evacuation that [local law enforcement] can remember.” Emergency relief centers are overflowing, and one case of looting in the fire zone has already been reported.
While emergency personnel are focusing on fighting the fire, they have not yet explored the number of injuries and possible deaths. As of November 5th, no deaths have been reported.
